Common Eligibility Criteria for Startup Grants

1. Company Registration

Most grants require your startup to be one of the following:

  • Registered as a Private Limited (preferred)

  • LLP

  • Partnership Firm (some grants allow)

Some programs require:

  • DPIIT recognition (Startup India)


2. Age of Startup

Usually:

  • Less than 10 years old

  • Some early-stage grants require startup < 2 years old


3. Business Stage

Grants mostly focus on:

  • Idea stage

  • PoC (Proof of Concept)

  • Prototype

  • Early revenue stage

If you are already a large profitable company, you may not qualify.


4. Innovation Requirement

Almost all grants (especially in India like SISFS, NIDHI-PRAYAS, TIDE) require:

  • An innovative idea

  • Technology-based solution

  • Something unique vs competitors

Routine service businesses usually do not qualify.


5. Sector Fit

Grants often target specific sectors:

  • AI / ML

  • Data / Cloud

  • Healthtech

  • AgriTech

  • CleanTech

  • EdTech

  • DeepTech

  • IoT / Hardware

If your domain matches their focus areas → chances increase.


6. Founder Eligibility

Some programs have requirements such as:

  • Indian citizen

  • Age between 18–65

  • Technical background (for tech grants)

  • Entrepreneurs with no prior large funding

  • Woman founder (for women-exclusive grants)


7. No Previous Large Funding

Many grants require:

  • No venture capital funding yet

  • No large government grant already received

Small seed money is generally acceptable.


8. Prototype Requirement

Some grants require:

  • A working prototype

  • Technical feasibility

  • Basic demo/MVP

Idea-only concepts may not qualify for some grants.


9. Incubation Requirement

Some grants require:

  • You must be incubated in an approved incubator
    (e.g., SISFS, NIDHI PRAYAS, TIDE 2.0)

  • Prototype must involve hardware/tech innovation

  • Founder < 35 years old (exceptions apply)

MeitY TIDE 2.0

  • Tech/digital startup

  • Incubated in a MeitY-approved incubator
